Why fascia rots first
The fascia is the board the gutter hangs on, running along the edge of the roof just below the shingles. When a gutter has been clogged or pitched wrong for a season or two, water spills over the back edge instead of the front, and that water sits against the fascia board every time it rains or the snow melts. Paint traps the moisture in rather than letting it dry, and within a couple of winters the board has softened enough that gutter hangers start pulling loose from it.
Once the fascia goes soft, it stops holding the gutter properly no matter how good the gutter itself is, which is why a sagging gutter and rotted fascia are so often the same repair call.
What is usually behind it
Pulling off a rotted fascia board on a Fargo house often reveals the rafter tails behind it have soaked up water too, especially where the roof edge has been shedding ice unevenly for years. We check every rafter tail we expose before closing anything back up, sistering new lumber onto any tail that has gone soft rather than covering it and hoping it holds.
This is also where we usually find the soffit vents blocked, painted shut, or simply missing behind an older fascia, which explains why the attic above has been running warm and building ice dams in the first place.
Rebuilding the venting properly
A fascia and soffit repair is the natural point to fix the attic ventilation, since the boards are already open. We install continuous soffit venting sized to work with whatever exhaust venting exists at the ridge, and we make sure insulation baffles are in place so attic insulation cannot get pushed against the roof deck and choke off the new vents. Skipping that step means paying for new fascia while leaving the exact condition that rotted the old fascia unaddressed.
Where the roof above the fascia also needs attention, we handle both in the same visit so the gutter goes back onto solid wood behind a roof edge that is actually sound.
Matching materials and finish
We rebuild fascia in either primed wood or PVC trim board depending on how much weather that section of the house sees and what the rest of the trim looks like. PVC holds up better against the splash and snow pile at ground level and on exposed corners, while matching the original wood profile keeps the look consistent on the parts of the house that are more visible from the street. Either way, the new board gets primed or capped on all sides before it goes up, not just on the face anyone can see.
