Two different housing stocks, two different problems
The older sections of West Fargo, closer to downtown and Sheyenne Street, have homes from the seventies and eighties with gutter and fascia systems that are due for replacement simply from age, plus soffit venting that was often undersized by today's standards. The newer subdivisions spreading west and south of the interstate have younger homes where the gutter itself is usually fine but was sized and installed by a builder's subcontractor working fast during construction, which sometimes means an undersized downspout count for the actual roof area draining into it.
We treat those two situations differently. On an older home the conversation is usually about replacement and updating the ventilation behind it. On a newer home it is more often about fixing an install shortcut from the original build.
Wind exposure on the newer edges of town
The newest neighborhoods pushing west toward open farmland get more direct wind than the established parts of West Fargo closer to the river, and that shows up as more wind-related gutter and siding calls out there. A gutter hung with wide hanger spacing holds up fine in a sheltered older neighborhood and sags or pulls loose faster on an exposed lot with nothing breaking the wind for half a mile.
When we quote a job on the newer west side, we usually spec tighter hanger spacing than we would on a comparable house in a more sheltered part of town, because the wind load is genuinely different.
Ice dams on West Fargo's ranch and split-level homes
A lot of West Fargo's older housing stock is ranch and split-level construction with shallow attic spaces, which is exactly the profile that builds ice dams fastest. Low attic volume means less room for insulation and less buffer before heat from the house reaches the roof deck. We see this pattern repeat on the same streets year after year, and the fix is the same each time: air seal the attic floor, bring insulation up to depth, and make sure soffit vents are actually open and not blocked by insulation pushed against them.
